Asia: HP touts SaaS app store to Asia's ISVs

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

SINGAPORE--Hewlett-Packard is targeting to pull both independent software vendors (ISVs) and enterprise customers into its orbit by providing a "connected cloud" through an app store platform that touts software-as-a-service (SaaS) offerings.
Kelly Tan, vice president and managing director at HP Singapore, said the app store--called AP4SaaS (aggregation platform for SaaS)--has been operating globally since June 2010 but is only being actively marketed in the Asia-Pacific region now.
The gap was to allow HP to ensure the platform was working properly, and that both ISVs and enterprise customers would be onboard with the vendor's "connected cloud" vision, Tan said during a media briefing here Friday.
The AP4SaaS platform sits as a layer atop the vendor's standard infrastructure platforms based on its ProLiant Blade systems and Intel Xeon processors.
Tan said plans for AP4SaaS originated from the work the company had…

More world´s brands smartphones makers to launch with dual-core CPU in 2011.

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Most major handset makers all plan to launch dual-core smartphones in 2011 as Nvidia, Qualcomm, Samsung Electronics, Texas Instruments (TI) and Broadcom have come out with dual-core platforms, according to industry sources.
While LG Electronics (LGE) and Motorola already unveiled their dual-core smartphones at CES, HTC, Samsung Electronics and Nokia are expected to showcase similar models at the upcoming Mobile World Conference (MWC), indicated the sources.
The chance is also high for Apple, RIM and Sony Ericsson to roll out dual-core smartphones soon, added the sources.
The requirement for stronger capability to manage multimedia functionality including 3D games and HD video has pushed handset vendors to develop dual-core processors, the sources asserted.
Nvidia's dual-core platforms have been adopted by LGE, Motorola and Dell, while Samsung's devices have gained support from Apple in addition to being used in-house.

F1 Race Cars : Ferrari unveils 2011 F150

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Formula One car with hydraulically controlled rear wing and KERS

The project, which goes by the internal code name of 662, represents the Scuderia’s interpretation of the technical and sporting regulations that apply this year. Various factors influenced the design of the car, especially on the aerodynamic front, to the extent that the F150 can be seen as severing ties with the recent past.
The innovative aspects are in part dictated by changes to the regulations and partly down to original thinking from our designers. As far as the rule changes from 2010 are concerned, the double diffuser and the blown rear wing are banned, as is the use of apertures in the front part of the floor, while the use of an hydraulically controlled adjustable rear wing has been introduced.
After an unofficial agreement between the teams saw its use banned for 2010, KERS is back this year, thanks partly to the increase in the car’s minimum weight and stricter c…

Science: Germany: Carbon nanotubes to make touch screens go at low-cost

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Capacitive touchscreens, the type most commonly used in consumer electronics, usually use a conductor made of indium tin oxide (ITO). This material is well suited to this purpose due to its excellent conductivity and its transparency in thin layers. Unfortunately there are few deposits of indium in the world, which has prompted a search for alternatives. One such new alternative are touchscreens containing carbon nanotubes, which researchers claim offer comparable performance to ITO, but are much cheaper.

The main components of the new electrode material developed by researchers at Fraunhofer are carbon nanotubes and low-cost polymers. The electrode foil is composed of two layers. One is a foil made of inexpensive polyethylenterephthalate (PET) like that used to make plastic bottles. The second is thin film that is formed when a mixture of carbon nanotubes and electrically conducting polymers that is applied to the PET as a solution dries…

Hubblecast 42: Hubble's Greatest Hits.

What makes a scientific discovery really important? It's partly down to how much scientists use the discovery in subsequent work — but it's also partly down to what inspires their imagination. In this episode, the Hubblecast talks to some leading astronomers about their favourite Hubble discovery.

How do we know if a scientific discovery is really important, or somehow special?

Well, when astronomers obtain a result, they usually write it up in an article for a scientific journal. And one way to know whether the result is important or not is to look at how often other astronomers refer to this article in their work.

That's the simple answer anyway. But there's a human component too. Some results simply capture our imagination more than others, and that too is an important part of what makes a truly great discovery.

In this episode, we're going to be talking to some leading astronomers…
