Amazon inks exclusive game Angry Birds Rio deal

WorldWideTech & Science. Francisco De Jesús.

Rovio said that its Angry Birds Rio game will be “introduced for the Android platform exclusively in the Amazon Appstore,” without stating when it will become available – as yet, Amazon has not inked a date for its Appstore launch.

The game, developed in partnership with Twentieth Century Fox, will also mark the first availability of paid-for (ad free) versions of the game on Android. Rovio has previously expressed concern about the monetisation potential of the Android platform, including the lack of paid-for product support across markets in Google’s own Android Market.

The move will enable Amazon to generate significant traffic for its app store at launch, in the hope that, once familiar, customers will use it to purchase and download other products. Rovio noted in a tweet that the deal “has financial benefits, too.”

When first launched on Android via GetJar, demand for Angry Birds caused service outages for the app store, with more than one million downloads over the first weekend.

The selection of Amazon over GetJar to launch Angry Birds Rio is also something of a loss for the independent store, although it does not offer any paid-for products.

Rovio is set to launch an iOS version of Angry Birds Rio next week, and has said it will be available in other Android app stores “eventually.” The company also confirmed it is planning to offer an ad-supported version of the title, as well as the paid-for release.

According to the Amazon blog post, Angry Birds has now been downloaded more than 100 million times (a figure confirmed by a Rovio tweet), including more than 30 million installations by Android users.
